Resurgence of HIV in Austin and Nationwide

Since 2006, there has been a 40 percent increase in the number of HIV-positive people in the Greater Austin area — far outpacing the population boom. (In that same time, Houston’s diagnoses have risen by only 12 percent; Dallas has seen a 23 percent decline in new cases since 2003.)

The number of people who have been newly infected in our area is also on the rise. From 2010 to 2012, 815 people tested positive for HIV, with more than half receiving an additional diagnosis of AIDS, which is when a person’s CD4 cell count drops below 200. AIDS is fatal without treatment.

While the disease is staging a dramatic comeback in Austin and other Texas communities, state and federal funding for healthcare services is down, increasing the need for community support and involvement. Over the past 17 years, the Hill Country Ride for AIDS has raised more than $8 million for HIV and AIDS treatment and prevention.

What are UnderRiders?

UnderRiders are a special group of donors that make it possible for as much participant fundraising as possible to get into the hands of those affected by HIV/AIDS in our community. UnderRiders are former Hill Country Ride for AIDS riders (maybe their knees insist they support the cause in new, less physical ways), philanthropists, and activists all passionate about the cause at hand. We are more than happy to have your donations online, but your donation will go even further if you help us avoid a service fee by mailing your check to Hill Country Ride for AIDS, P.O. Box 49097, Austin, TX 78765.

In 2016 UnderRiders raised over $90,000! You can help make 2017 the best year ever!

100% of donations by UnderRiders are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
